Open gear lubricant for mining shovels, draglines, mills and kilns

For open gears on mining shovels, TotalEnergies offers Multis Mine OGL 1, a dual-purpose grease for swing gears, racks and pinions as well as bushings and bearings, and Grafolog H 2200, a graphite spray grease that meets the requirements of P&H 464 and Bucyrus/Cat SD 4713 (except hoist drum gears) from 0 to 40 °C. For mill and kiln girth gears the choice is Gear Fluid 550, which meets AGMA 9005-E2 Annex D. Bulk Lubricants Australia supplies them from Perth, with freight Australia-wide.

Top takeaways

  • Shovels: one grease or a dedicated spray grease. TotalEnergies positions Multis Mine OGL 1 to cut the number of greases on board large shovels, and Grafolog H 2200 for automatic or manual spray systems on draglines, shovels and excavators.
  • Check the temperature window on OEM statements. Grafolog H 2200's P&H 464 and Bucyrus/Cat SD 4713 statements apply from 0 °C to +40 °C, and SD 4713 excludes hoist drum gears.
  • Mills and kilns: a thick fluid, not a grease. Gear Fluid 550 is a half-synthetic fluid of 17,000 mm²/s at 40 °C for slow, very high-power girth gears, applied by bath, paddle wheel, circulation or spray.
  • Priming and small gears have their own products. Copal OGL 2 is listed as a priming lubricant for kiln and mill gears; Ceran AD Plus suits small open gears, wire ropes and winches in wet duty.
  • The manual decides. OEM wording here is TotalEnergies' own, not a place on an OEM's approved list.

Which open gear lubricant suits which job?

Open gears run slowly under very high loads with no housing to hold the oil in, so the lubricant has to stick to the teeth and carry extreme pressure. Mobile mining plant (swing gears, racks and pinions, slew rings, drag and hoist drums) and fixed plant (mill and kiln girth gears) need different products. The table compares the five we supply, as printed on each data sheet.

“Best for” is our reading of each data sheet’s applications section. Viscosity is the base oil for the greases and the fluid itself for Gear Fluid 550. Weld loads are shown in the unit each data sheet prints (kgf, kg or daN), so compare like with like.

Do they meet P&H, Caterpillar or Liebherr requirements?

The data sheets name OEM references in TotalEnergies’ own words. “Meets the requirements of” and a list of applications are manufacturer statements, not a place on an OEM’s approved list. Your operation and maintenance manual decides.

Multis Mine OGL 1[1]P&H 520, multiservice grease; Liebherr grease specifications P1 (P2) and P3 for bushings, bearings and swing gears. Also lists Cat, Epiroc, Komatsu, Sandvik, Hitachi, JCB, Volvo and Atlas Copco equipment.Manufacturer-reported suitable; confirm in your manual
Grafolog H 2200[2]Meets the requirements of P&H 464 and of Bucyrus/Cat SD 4713 (except hoist drum gears), both from 0 °C to +40 °C. Lists FLSmidth, Ferry Capitain and Van der Wegen. How do I choose?

  1. Read the manual. Note the open gear specification (for example P&H 464 or Bucyrus/Cat SD 4713) and the application method it names.
  2. Match the application method. Spray systems take a soft grease such as Grafolog H 2200 (NLGI 0/00) [2]; bath and circulation on mills and kilns take a thick fluid such as Gear Fluid 550 [3].
  3. Check the ambient temperature. Grafolog H 2200’s OEM statements apply from 0 to 40 °C, and TotalEnergies recommends heating Gear Fluid 550 distribution systems below 5 °C [2, 3].
  4. Cut the number of greases on board. Where the manual allows, Multis Mine OGL 1 covers swing gears and bearings with one grease [1]. For pins, bushes and bearings across the rest of the fleet, see our mining grease guide.
  5. Request a price for the product and pack you need.

Our view

Our opinion: on rope shovels where the manual allows a multiservice grease, Multis Mine OGL 1 keeps the lube truck simple. Where the OEM calls for a dedicated open gear spray lubricant, look at Grafolog H 2200 and check its 0 to 40 °C window against your site. On fixed plant girth gears, Gear Fluid 550 is the product built for the job. Whatever you pick, the manual wins.

Common questions

What is the best open gear lubricant for mining shovels in Australia?
Use the lubricant your shovel's manual names. In the TotalEnergies range, Multis Mine OGL 1 is the dual-purpose choice for swing gears, racks and pinions, bushings and bearings, and Grafolog H 2200 is the spray grease for heavily loaded open gears on draglines, shovels and excavators. Both are supplied by Bulk Lubricants Australia from Perth.
Does Grafolog H 2200 meet P&H and Caterpillar open gear specifications?
TotalEnergies' data sheet says Grafolog H 2200 meets the requirements of P&H 464 and Bucyrus/Cat SD 4713 (except for hoist drum gears), both from 0 °C to +40 °C. That is TotalEnergies' statement, not an OEM approval list, so confirm against your machine's manual and ambient temperatures.
Can one grease cover a shovel's open gears and its bearings?
That is what Multis Mine OGL 1 is for. TotalEnergies describes it as a dual-application grease for slow-moving plain and heavily loaded rolling bearings and for open gears on shovels (swing and rack and pinion), so fewer greases are stored and mixed on site. It names P&H 520 multiservice grease and Liebherr P1 (P2) and P3 for bushings, bearings and swing gears.
What lubricant suits ball mill and kiln girth gears?
TotalEnergies lists Gear Fluid 550 for open gears with peripheral speeds up to 10 m/s and power that can exceed 2 x 5,000 kW, mainly on mills and kilns with rotary drums. It is a half-synthetic fluid, free from solvent, chlorine, heavy metals and solid particles, and meets ANSI/AGMA 9005-E2 Annex D. Grafolog H 2200 is the spray-grease alternative for ball, rod, SAG and Aerofall mill drives.
What does AGMA 9005-E2 Annex D mean?
ANSI/AGMA 9005 is the American Gear Manufacturers Association standard for industrial gear lubrication, and its annexes cover open-gear lubricants. Gear Fluid 550's data sheet states that it meets the requirements of Annex D. Check which annex and viscosity your gear maker specifies.
Do these open gear greases contain lead or bitumen?
The Copal OGL 2 and Ceran AD Plus data sheets say they contain no lead or other heavy metals considered harmful. Gear Fluid 550 is free from solvent, chlorine, heavy metals and solid particles. Grafolog H 2200 uses a high content of purified graphite with an aluminium complex soap.
What is a priming lubricant for open gears?
A priming lubricant is brushed onto new or refurbished gear teeth before running-in and service lubrication take over. TotalEnergies lists Copal OGL 2 as usable as a priming lubricant for gears of kilns and mills, applied by pneumatic pump, brush or other suitable tool.
