Tractor transmission oil guide
UTTO tractor transmission oil in Australia: which TotalEnergies grade fits
UTTO (Universal Tractor Transmission Oil) is one oil for a tractor's transmission, wet brakes, hydraulics and PTO. In the TotalEnergies range, Bulk Lubricants Australia supplies Dynatrans MPX, a 10W-30 or 80W grade UTTO, and Dynatrans VX FE, a low-viscosity UTTO for machines that call for J20D or UTTO-LV. Check your manual's specification against each data sheet's approvals below, then collect from Perth or have it freighted anywhere in Australia.

What each status on this page means
| Status | What it means |
|---|---|
| Approved | Listed under "Manufacturer approvals" on the TotalEnergies data sheet. The strongest status here. |
| Meets | TotalEnergies states the oil "meets the requirements of" that specification. A manufacturer statement, not a place on the OEM's list. |
| Suitable for (manufacturer-reported) | Listed under "Suitable for" on the data sheet. TotalEnergies' own claim. |
| Confirm in your manual | Anything not on the data sheet, and the viscosity your machine needs. The operator's manual always wins. |
Top takeaways
- There's no single UTTO standard. John Deere notes that no industry classification exists for transmission/hydraulic oil; each manufacturer sets its own minimum [4]. Match the OEM specification in your manual, not the word 'UTTO'.
- Dynatrans MPX covers the widest list. Its data sheet lists approvals from Valtra, Volvo (WB101), ZF and Dana, and meets John Deere J20C and Massey Ferguson M1145/M1143 [1].
- Low-viscosity machines need a low-viscosity oil. Dynatrans VX FE meets John Deere J20D, Dana-OHTM-UTTO-LV and Volvo 97304 (WB102), and is for use where an SAE 5W oil of this type is needed [2].
- STOU is a different product. Multagri Super 15W-40 is a Super Tractor Oil Universal: one oil for the diesel engine and the transmission [3]. A UTTO is not an engine oil.
- Approved, meets and suitable are not the same. We copy each claim in TotalEnergies' wording and never upgrade it.
Which UTTO grade suits which machine?
One oil in a tractor transmission does several jobs at once: it protects heavily loaded gears and the hydraulic pump, and gives the right friction for wet brakes and clutches [4]. The table compares the two UTTOs and the STOU we supply, as printed on each data sheet.
| Product | Best for | Type | Grade | mm²/s at 40 °C | mm²/s at 100 °C | Viscosity index | Pour point °C |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dynatrans MPX[1] | Tractor and Public Works transmissions with wet brakes, plus hydraulics, power steering and PTOs with wet clutches | UTTO (Universal Tractor Transmission Oil) | API GL-4; 10W-30 or 80W | 63 | 10.4 | 154 | −42 |
| Dynatrans VX FE[2] | Off-road transmissions and axles with wet brakes that call for a low-viscosity UTTO (J20D, Dana UTTO-LV, Volvo WB102) | UTTO, fuel economy | API GL-4; for use where an SAE 5W oil of this type is needed | 40.3 | 7.7 | 165 | −42 |
| Multagri Super 15W-40[3] | Farm machinery where one oil serves the diesel engine and the transmission | STOU (Super Tractor Oil Universal) | Engine: 15W-40, ACEA E2; transmission: API GL-4, 80W-90 performance | 99.4 | 13.5 | 135 | −39 |
“Best for” is our reading of each data sheet’s applications section. Figures are typical values; TotalEnergies notes they are not specifications.
Which OEM approvals does each grade carry?
Each data sheet groups OEM references under its own headings. We keep them apart, because an approval, a “meets” statement and a “suitable for” line carry different weight. Your operator’s manual decides.

UTTO or STOU: which do I need?
Choose a UTTO when the manual names a transmission/hydraulic oil specification. Choose a STOU only when the manual allows one oil for the engine and the transmission.
- UTTO. Dynatrans MPX is for transmissions with wet brakes requiring an API GL-4 lubricant of 10W-30 or 80W grade, and is also adapted to automatic transmissions, torque converters and hydrostatic transmissions [1]. Dynatrans VX FE does the same job where an SAE 5W oil of this type is needed [2].
- STOU. Multagri Super 15W-40 is for turbocharged or naturally aspirated diesel engines and for mechanical transmissions, oil-bath brakes, hydraulic lift circuits and PTOs requiring API GL-4 / MIL-L-2105 SAE 80W-90 performance [3].
- John Deere machines. The letter matters: J20C and J20D are different viscosity standards. See our John Deere JDM J20C vs J20D guide.
How do I choose?
- Find the specification in the manual, for example CNH MAT 3525, Massey Ferguson CMS M1145, John Deere J20C or Volvo WB101.
- Find it in the approvals table above and note its status: approved, meets or suitable for.
- Check the viscosity. Standard UTTO machines take Dynatrans MPX [1]; machines that call for a low-viscosity oil (J20D, UTTO-LV, WB102) take Dynatrans VX FE [2].
- Store it well. TotalEnergies says not to store these oils above 60 °C and to lay drums horizontally if they must be kept outside [1, 2, 3].
- Request a price for the product and pack you need.
Our view
Our opinion: for a mixed fleet of tractors and loaders, Dynatrans MPX is the one to start with, because its data sheet covers the most OEM specifications. Keep Dynatrans VX FE for the machines whose manual asks for a low-viscosity oil, label the drums clearly, and don’t put a UTTO in an engine. Whatever you pick, the manual wins.
Common questions
- What is UTTO oil?
- UTTO stands for Universal Tractor Transmission Oil. It is a single oil for tractor and machinery transmissions with wet brakes, hydraulic circuits, power steering and power take-offs with wet clutches. TotalEnergies' data sheets describe Dynatrans MPX and Dynatrans VX FE this way.
- What is the difference between UTTO and STOU?
- A UTTO is for transmissions, wet brakes and hydraulics only. A STOU (Super Tractor Oil Universal) such as Multagri Super 15W-40 also lubricates the diesel engine; its data sheet lists ACEA E2 and API CF-4 for engines alongside API GL-4 for transmissions. Use a STOU in an engine only where the manual allows it.
- Which TotalEnergies UTTO is suitable for Case, New Holland and CNH tractors?
- The Dynatrans MPX data sheet lists it as suitable for Case MS1206/MS1207/MS1209, CNH MAT 3505/3509/3525/3526/3540 and New Holland NH 410C/NH 410B. Dynatrans VX FE lists CNH MAT 3505/3526, Case MS 1206/1207/1209 and New Holland NH 410C. These are TotalEnergies' 'suitable for' statements, not CNH approvals, so confirm against your manual.
- Is Dynatrans MPX approved by ZF, Volvo or Dana?
- Yes, according to its data sheet: manufacturer approvals are Valtra G2-08, Volvo 97303 (WB101), ZF TE-ML 03E/05F/06D/06K/06N/06R/17E/21F and Dana-OHTM-UTTO (Approval ID 21K-0007).
- What is a low-viscosity UTTO?
- A thinner UTTO for machines whose manual calls for it, such as John Deere JDM J20D or Dana-OHTM-UTTO-LV. Dynatrans VX FE meets those requirements and Volvo 97304 (WB102); its data sheet shows 40.3 mm²/s at 40 °C and a viscosity index of 165, against 63 mm²/s and 154 for Dynatrans MPX.
- Which UTTO meets John Deere J20C?
- Dynatrans MPX meets the requirements of John Deere JDM J20C. For J20D, it is Dynatrans VX FE. Our John Deere J20 guide covers the difference in detail.
