John Deere JDM J20C vs J20D transmission-hydraulic oil: which grade meets which
TotalEnergies' data sheets say Dynatrans MPX and Multagri Super 15W-40 meet JDM J20C, and Dynatrans VX FE meets JDM J20D.[4][5][6]
J20C and J20D are different viscosity standards, so don't swap one for the other unless your John Deere manual allows it. None of these grades is John Deere approved: John Deere publishes no approved list for J20.[1][2]

What is the JDM J20 specification?
JDM J20 is John Deere's minimum standard for tractor transmission and hydraulic oil. There is no industry classification for these oils, so each tractor maker sets its own.[1]
These oils lubricate shared transmission and hydraulic systems, including wet brakes and clutches, so friction matters as well as wear protection. John Deere says it does not monitor 'will-fit' oils.[1][3]
J20C vs J20D: what's the difference?
Viscosity. John Deere's Hy-Gard is for applications calling for J20C. Low-Viscosity Hy-Gard, an ISO 32 oil, is for J20D and can replace Hy-Gard in cold weather.[1]
| JDM J20C | JDM J20D | |
|---|---|---|
| John Deere's own oil | Hy-Gard | Low-Viscosity Hy-Gard (ISO 32) |
| Swapping (per John Deere) | Use where the manual names J20C | Can replace Hy-Gard in cold weather |
| TotalEnergies grades that meet it | Dynatrans MPX; Multagri Super 15W-40 (transmissions) | Dynatrans VX FE |
Can I mix or swap J20C and J20D oils?
Only as your manual allows. One John Deere operator's manual allows mixing Low-Viscosity Hy-Gard with Hy-Gard, but no other oils, in that transmission. It also warns against engine oil or 'Type F' (red) automatic transmission fluid.[2]
Treat J20C and J20D oils as different products: pick the one your model's manual names for your climate.(our interpretation)
Is a 'meets J20C' oil the same as Hy-Gard?
No. John Deere says Hy-Gard exceeds its J20 specification and has more mandatory performance tests. An oil that meets J20C meets John Deere's minimum standard.[3]
- John Deere manuals name the preferred John Deere oil, and say other oils may be used if they meet the listed standard, such as JDM J20C or J20D.[2]
- For an automatic transmission in the same fleet, see the Allison TES 668 guide.(our interpretation)

On 24 Oct 2026 we read John Deere's Hy-Gard product bulletin, a John Deere operator's manual and the Hy-Gard brochure. We then compared each grade's TotalEnergies data sheet with the TotalEnergies product list supplied to us, using the weaker wording wherever they differ.
