Caterpillar ECF-3 engine oil: what the spec covers and which grades meet it
ECF-3 is Caterpillar's highest Engine Crankcase Fluid specification for commercial diesel engine oils, defined by the API CJ-4 performance requirements.[1]
TotalEnergies' data sheets say Rubia Works 4000 15W-40, 5000 10W-40 and 5000 FE 5W-30 meet ECF-3. Caterpillar does not approve or verify ECF-3 claims, so check the oil and SAE grade your engine's manual names.[2][3][4][5]

What is Caterpillar ECF-3?
Caterpillar developed its ECF specifications to ensure minimum acceptable performance from commercial diesel engine oils. They require more engine tests than the matching API categories, and each step up gives more performance: ECF-3 is above ECF-2 and well above ECF-1-a.[1]
Is any oil 'Caterpillar approved' for ECF-3?
Caterpillar says it will not monitor or verify claims of ECF-3 compliance; each oil supplier is responsible for its own product. That is why the grades on this page are shown as meeting ECF-3, never as approved.[5]
How does ECF-3 compare with API CK-4 and FA-4?
Caterpillar did not write an ECF specification for API CK-4. It accepts commercial oils that are API CK-4 licensed and/or meet ECF-1-a, ECF-2 or ECF-3 as second choice in Cat diesel engines, after Cat oils. API FA-4 oils are not allowed in Cat engines.[1]
| Oil category | Caterpillar's position for Cat diesel engines |
|---|---|
| Cat engine oils | First choice |
| Commercial oil meeting ECF-3 (defined by API CJ-4 performance) | Acceptable, second choice |
| Commercial oil that is API CK-4 licensed | Acceptable, second choice (no ECF spec for CK-4) |
| API FA-4 | Not allowed |
Does an ECF-3 oil suit every Tier 4 or Stage V engine?
Don't assume so. Caterpillar says engines with aftertreatment devices, including those certified to US EPA Tier 4 Nonroad and EU Stage IIIB, IV and V, need specially formulated oils. The engine's own manual sets the exact oil and viscosity.[1]
ECF-3 is one of Caterpillar's requirements. A non-Cat engine, or a Cat engine whose manual names something else, may need a different spec or SAE grade.(our interpretation)
TotalEnergies recommends Rubia Works 4000 15W-40 for engines with exhaust after-treatment systems, and says Rubia Works 5000 10W-40 and 5000 FE 5W-30 are especially suited to earthmoving, quarrying and construction engines.[2][3][4]
How do I choose between the three Rubia Works grades?
Start with the SAE viscosity grade your manual lists for your temperature range (15W-40, 10W-40 or 5W-30). Then check any other approvals your fleet needs on the data sheet.(our interpretation)
- For mixed fleets, the data sheets also carry Cummins, Volvo and Mercedes-Benz approvals; see the Cummins and Volvo approvals guide and the Mercedes-Benz 228.31 / 228.51 guide.(our interpretation)
