Engine oil approvals guide
Cummins CES 20086 and Volvo VDS-4.5 approved engine oil in Australia
TotalEnergies lists Rubia Works 4000 15W-40 (mineral) and Rubia Works 5000 10W-40 (semi-synthetic) as approved to Cummins CES 20086, Volvo VDS-4.5 and Mack EO-S 4.5. For Rubia Works 5000 FE 5W-30 (full synthetic), TotalEnergies' data sheet reports CES 20086 and Mack EO-S 4.5 but its Australian product page doesn't, so confirm those for your engine. Bulk Lubricants Australia supplies all three from Perth with freight Australia-wide.

Choosing between them
- Start with the manual. The grade and approval your engine maker specifies come first. Cummins’ B6.7 (EPA 2021) guide, for example, calls for CES 20086 (CK-4) oil and recommends 10W-30 or 15W-40.
- 15W-40 fleets. Rubia Works 4000 15W-40 is the mineral 15W-40 with CES 20086, VDS-4.5 and MB 228.31.
- Mixed fleets with German engines. Rubia Works 5000 10W-40 and 5000 FE 5W-30 add MB 228.51 (DTFR 15C110), and Daimler Truck lists both for 228.52 (DTFR 15C120). Rubia Works 5000 10W-40 also carries CES 20086 and VDS-4.5; for 5000 FE 5W-30, confirm CES 20086.
- Fuel use. TotalEnergies says independent tests found Rubia Works 5000 FE 5W-30 can save 1.47% fuel against a standard SAE 15W-40 oil.
Common questions
- Which TotalEnergies engine oils are Cummins CES 20086 approved?
- Rubia Works 4000 15W-40 and Rubia Works 5000 10W-40. TotalEnergies' data sheet also lists CES 20086 for Rubia Works 5000 FE 5W-30, but its Australian product page doesn't, so confirm it with your engine manual or Cummins before relying on it.
- Is API CK-4 the same as Cummins CES 20086?
- No. API CK-4 is an industry oil category, while CES 20086 is Cummins' own engineering standard. Cummins writes it as CES 20086 (CK-4) in its service literature, and TotalEnergies lists the Cummins approval separately from API CK-4 on its product information, so look for the Cummins line itself rather than the API category alone.
- Which viscosity grade should I use in a Cummins engine?
- Follow your engine's operation and maintenance manual. For example, Cummins' quick reference guide for the 2021 B6.7 says an oil meeting CES 20086 (CK-4) must be used and recommends 10W-30 or 15W-40. Of the three grades here, Rubia Works 4000 is the 15W-40.
- Do these oils also have Volvo VDS-4.5 and Mack EO-S 4.5 approval?
- TotalEnergies lists Volvo VDS-4.5 for all three, and Mack EO-S 4.5 for Rubia Works 4000 15W-40 and 5000 10W-40. For 5000 FE 5W-30, Mack EO-S 4.5 appears on the data sheet but not on TotalEnergies' Australian product page, so confirm it.
- What is the difference between Rubia Works 4000 and Rubia Works 5000?
- Rubia Works 4000 15W-40 is a mineral oil with MB 228.31 (DTFR 15C100) approval. Rubia Works 5000 10W-40 (semi-synthetic) and 5000 FE 5W-30 (full synthetic) carry MB 228.51 (DTFR 15C110), and both are on Daimler Truck's DTFR 15C120 (228.52) list published 23 Oct 2026. TotalEnergies says independent tests found the 5000 FE 5W-30 can save 1.47% fuel compared with a standard SAE 15W-40 oil.
