Mercedes-Benz 228.31 and 228.51 engine oil: which Rubia Works grade carries which approval

TotalEnergies' data sheets list DTFR 15C100 (228.31) under manufacturer approvals for Rubia Works 4000 15W-40, and DTFR 15C110 (228.51) for Rubia Works 5000 10W-40 and 5000 FE 5W-30.[1][2][3]

We also found each of those grades on Daimler Truck's own list for that sheet (published 23 Oct 2026, checked 24 Oct 2026). 228.31 and 228.51 are different sheets, so use the one your vehicle's manual names.[4][5]

Approval status at a glance

Four status levels: OEM-approved (OEM list); TotalEnergies-reported suitable; Meets stated performance (TotalEnergies claim); Confirm in your equipment manual. Where sources disagree we show the weaker one.

228.31 vs 228.51: what's the difference for buying oil?

They are separate Mercedes-Benz sheets, now run by Daimler Truck as DTFR 15C100 (228.31) and DTFR 15C110 (228.51). Daimler Truck titles both 'low SPAsh multigrade service engine oils', and each has its own list of approved products.[6][4][5]

One oil can't stand in for the other: buy the sheet number in your manual. Some data sheets list several sheets, and Daimler's lists are the tie-breaker.(our interpretation)

Is Rubia Works 5000 10W-40 approved for 228.31?

We don't present it as approved for 228.31. Its data sheet lists DTFR 15C100 (228.31), but the product wasn't on Daimler Truck's DTFR 15C100 list when we checked on 24 Oct 2026 (list published 23 Oct 2026). It is on the DTFR 15C110 (228.51) list.[2][4][5]

Do Rubia Works 5000 10W-40 and 5000 FE 5W-30 also carry 228.52?

Yes. Both are on Daimler Truck's DTFR 15C120 (228.52) list, published 23 Oct 2026, which we checked on 24 Oct 2026. Rubia Works 4000 15W-40 isn't on that list.[8]

The 5000 FE 5W-30 data sheet lists DTFR 15C120 (228.52) under manufacturer approvals, while the 5000 10W-40 data sheet lists it only as 'suitable for'. We show both as listed for 228.52 because Daimler Truck's own list includes them.[2][3][8]

If your manual names 228.52 or DTFR 15C120, these are the two grades we stock on that list.(our interpretation)

Are the old 228.31 and 228.51 numbers still valid?

Mercedes-Benz's 228.51 sheet says it has transferred to Daimler Truck AG, and that products approved under the old number, and remaining stock, may be used until the end of 2027.[7]

Daimler Truck's DTFR overview (status 08/2026) maps 228.31 to DTFR 15C100 and 228.51 to DTFR 15C110.[6]

How do I check a Mercedes-Benz or Daimler Truck approval myself?

Search the product on Daimler Truck's operating fluids site for the sheet your manual names. The lists show product IDs, not approval numbers, so note the list's publish date.[4][5]

  • Find the sheet number (228.31 or 228.51) or the DTFR number in the owner's manual or service booklet.(our interpretation)
  • For Cat engines in the same fleet, see the Caterpillar ECF-3 guide; these Rubia Works grades meet ECF-3 per TotalEnergies.[1][2][3]

How did we check this?

On 24 Oct 2026 we read the TotalEnergies data sheet for each grade and compared it with the TotalEnergies product list supplied to us. We then checked each grade against Daimler Truck's DTFR 15C100 and 15C110 lists (both published 23 Oct 2026) and the DTFR overview. A data-sheet approval missing from Daimler's list isn't shown as approved.
