Caterpillar TO-4 transmission oil after the April 2025 retirement: what changed

As of 1 April 2025, Caterpillar removed its TO-4 / TO-4M transmission and drive train oil specification from publication and says third-party oils claiming it are used at the machine owner's risk.[1]

TotalEnergies' data sheets say Dynatrans ACX 10W, 30, 50 and 60 meet TO-4. That is TotalEnergies' claim, not a Caterpillar approval, so check your machine's manual or your Cat dealer for each compartment.[2][3][5][6]

Approval status at a glance

Four status levels: OEM-approved (OEM list); TotalEnergies-reported suitable; Meets stated performance (TotalEnergies claim); Confirm in your equipment manual. Where the TotalEnergies product list and data sheet disagree, we show the data sheet’s wording.

Confirm in your equipment manual: Caterpillar removed TO-4 from publication on 1 Apr 2025 and does not endorse third-party TO-4 claims.

What did Caterpillar change about TO-4 in 2025?

Caterpillar removed TO-4 / TO-4M, the FD-1 final drive oil specification and BF-2 from publication on 1 April 2025, and will no longer monitor or support them. Its fluid requirements now live in internal Caterpillar '1E' specifications.[1]

Caterpillar says it made the change because it does not test third-party oils and does not want to imply it endorses them. Cat-branded lubricant labels may still show TO-4 during 2025, until packaging is updated.[1]

What does the retirement mean for machines already running a TO-4 oil?

Caterpillar's notice does not say that oils made to TO-4 stopped working, or that machines need a different oil. What changed is who stands behind the claim: Caterpillar no longer verifies third-party TO-4 claims, so on a non-Cat oil the claim is the oil maker's own.(our interpretation)

For choosing a lubricant, Caterpillar points to your OMM, your Cat dealer, SEBU6250, SEBU6251 and the Cat fluid selector.[1]

If a machine is under a Caterpillar warranty or service agreement, ask your dealer which oils it accepts before you switch.(our interpretation)

Which Dynatrans ACX grade goes in which compartment?

TotalEnergies matches the grades to compartments: SAE 10W mainly in hydraulic systems, SAE 30 mainly in powershift transmissions and SAE 50 mainly in axles and final drives. SAE 60 is for axles and final gears where the ambient temperature stays above 40°C, with peaks above 50°C.[2][3]

Whatever the data sheet says, the SAE grade has to match the one your manual lists for that compartment and temperature range.(our interpretation)

How do I check what my machine needs now?

Start with the OMM for each compartment (transmission, final drives, hydraulics). It names the oil type and SAE grade. Then confirm with your Cat dealer or SEBU6250 if you're unsure.[1][4]

  • Keep the data sheet for the oil you chose with your maintenance records, so the wording you relied on is on file.(our interpretation)
  • For engine oil in the same machines, Caterpillar still publishes its ECF specifications: see our Caterpillar ECF-3 engine oil guide.(our interpretation)

How did we check this?

On 24 Oct 2026 we read Caterpillar's announcement 'Caterpillar TO-4 Specification to be De-Commissioned', on Caterpillar's own document host. We then compared the Dynatrans ACX data sheets with the TotalEnergies product list supplied to us. cat.com blocks automated reads, so we used the copy on Caterpillar's asset server (caterpillar.scene7.com).
